How do you burn firewood more efficiently?

Store it so it stays dry, use dry kindling to establish the fire, give the heater enough air to burn cleanly, and avoid deliberately choking the fire into a long smoky smoulder. Every wood heater is different, so the manufacturer's instructions come first. The general principle is to establish a lively fire with dry fuel and enough air for clean combustion rather than trying to make wet wood or a smoky fire last longer.
1. Use dry kindling
Dry kindling helps establish heat quickly. Arrange it as your heater manufacturer recommends and use an appropriate firelighter if needed.
2. Establish the fire
Give the fire the airflow your heater requires while the kindling and first pieces catch. A weak, smoky start usually does not improve by immediately restricting the air.
3. Reload sensibly
Add suitable dry firewood without overfilling the firebox, then operate the air controls in line with the appliance instructions. Aim for an active, clean burn rather than prolonged smouldering.

Keep good firewood good.
Buying dry firewood only helps if it stays dry after delivery. A simple, ventilated storage setup is usually better than sealing firewood into a damp enclosed space.
Protect it from weather
Keep the stack out of direct rain and avoid locations where water pools around the base. A covered top with air able to move around the stack is practical for long-term storage.
If you have just received a bulk delivery, choose a storage location that is convenient enough that you will actually keep the wood protected rather than leaving the whole load exposed.
Allow ventilation
Firewood benefits from airflow. Avoid wrapping an entire stack airtight or packing it into a permanently damp corner.
Rotate older stock forward and keep your dry kindling particularly well protected — it is the part of the fuel supply you rely on to get the next fire established quickly.
