Why Chug?More than orange paint — I’m a little piece of the Hills.

Chug was chosen because he was bright, orange and cheerful — just like our team. Orange became our uniform colour because it stands out around people, vehicles and machinery, particularly in our Barnyard. Luckily, Chug arrived already wearing the Allis-Chalmers orange.

Born for this chapterBuilt from the late 1930s, just as Upper Beaconsfield was coming alive!

Allis-Chalmers began building the Model B in 1938 — just after the official opening of the Beaconsfield–Emerald Road and the same year the Store was taken over by the Loveridges family.

The Loveridges became the longest-serving custodians of the Store. The Davey family are hoping to break that record!

Meet the real ChugAllis-Chalmers Model B • 4-cylinder • 2WD

I’m a 1940 Allis-Chalmers Model B — serial B81899. A four-cylinder petrol engine, three forward gears, reverse and two-wheel drive. Built for practical farm work, and still fully functioning today.

Where I came fromFrom a Gippsland farm to the General Store.

I came from a farm in Gippsland, and I was even an entry at the Heyfield Tractor Show. I would have been bought from a dealer in Melbourne to work a small-scale farm, like the 50 orchards that once surrounded Upper Beaconsfield.
