Spring Mulching: Why Eucey Mulch Is a Great Choice for Hills Gardens

As the days warm up, garden beds start drying faster and weeds start moving. A fresh layer of mulch now can help protect the soil before summer — and Eucey is one of our favourite options for a dark, natural finish.

Why mulch now?

Warmer weather is the right reminder to check what is covering your soil.

Mulch is easy to forget while the garden is damp and cool. But once spring growth takes off and warmer, drier days arrive, exposed soil loses moisture faster and weeds can compete more strongly for water. Refreshing tired or thin mulch before the hottest part of the year gives garden beds a more protective surface layer and can make summer garden care easier.

The first step is not automatically adding more. Rake back a small area and check what is already there. If you still have a healthy layer, simply tidy it. If it has broken down or become patchy, that is the time to top it up.

Why Eucey?

A practical mulch with a naturally finished look.

Eucey Mulch combines ground natural wood materials with organic matter. Its particles range from about 1mm to 15mm, with an average around 6–10mm, giving it a finer and more settled appearance than many chunky bark mulches.

01

Dark, natural appearance

The dark colour gives established beds a clean finish without looking highly coloured or artificial. It works particularly well where you want the plants — not the mulch — to be the visual focus.

02

Fine, consistent texture

With most material sitting around the 6–10mm range, Eucey spreads neatly through garden beds and around established plantings. The finer texture also gives freshly mulched areas a finished, settled look.

03

Organic material that changes over time

Like other natural wood mulches, Eucey gradually breaks down. The manufacturer notes that as it decomposes it begins returning nutrients to the soil, so the mulch becomes part of the garden rather than remaining a permanent surface layer.

What mulch does

It is not just about making the garden look finished.

A useful mulch layer helps cover bare soil. In practical terms, that can support moisture conservation, moderate the soil surface from temperature extremes and make it harder for many weeds to establish through the bed.

  • Helps conserve moisture: covering soil reduces direct exposure to sun and wind, which matters as warmer weather increases water demand.
  • Helps with weeds: mulch reduces light reaching the soil surface. It will not eliminate weeds, but it can reduce germination and make the ones that appear easier to manage.
  • Buffers the soil surface: a mulch layer helps insulate the upper soil from rapid heating and drying.
  • Improves the finished look: Eucey's dark, fine texture gives beds a consistent backdrop around plants.
Water first if the soil is already dry. Mulch is best used to help retain moisture that is in the soil. If a bed is very dry, give it a thorough watering before applying a fresh layer.
How to refresh a garden bed

Four simple steps before summer.

Step 1

Weed first

Remove established weeds before covering the bed. Mulch works best as part of weed management, not as a way of burying mature weeds.

Step 2

Check the old layer

Measure what remains. If there is already good coverage, you may only need a top-up rather than a full new layer.

Step 3

Spread evenly

For many established beds, roughly 50–100mm total mulch depth is a practical range. Around 75mm is a useful starting point, adjusted for the site and what is already there.

Step 4

Keep stems clear

Do not mound mulch against tree trunks or plant stems. Leave space around the base so the mulch is protecting soil rather than sitting against living tissue.

Common questions

Eucey Mulch FAQs.

What is Eucey Mulch made from?

It is made from a combination of ground natural wood materials and organic matter. The product has a dark appearance and a natural, fine-textured finish.

How fine is Eucey Mulch?

Particles range from about 1mm to 15mm, with an average around 6–10mm. That gives it a finer look than many chunkier bark mulches.

Does Eucey Mulch break down?

Yes. It is an organic mulch, so it gradually decomposes. The manufacturer notes that this process begins adding nutrients back into the soil over time.

How deep should I spread it?

For many established beds, a total mulch depth of roughly 50–100mm is a useful general range, with around 75mm a practical starting point. Check the existing layer first and avoid piling mulch against trunks or stems.

Can you deliver Eucey Mulch?

Yes. Eucey Mulch is stocked in our Upper Beaconsfield yard in 1m³, ¾m³, ½m³ and ¼m³ quantities, with local garden-supply delivery available. Check the live product and delivery pages for current availability and delivery areas.
