How To Clean A Sofa

Depending on how you use a sofa, it can take a lot of abuse and end up looking stained and unappealing. When this happens, many people shy away from deep cleaning their sofas because they are upholstered. At Work, Leisure, Play we sell a variety of sofas. If your sofa is now beyond repair, consider getting a brand new one from us today. In this blog we discuss how you can deep clean your sofa and get it sparkling clean.

1. Things to keep in mind

There are a few things that you need to keep at the back of your mind before you start deep cleaning your sofa. Firstly, you need to look at your manufacturer’s instructions. This is in case there is a warranty available and if you alter the sofa it becomes null and void. If your sofa did not come with a manufacturer’s instruction manual, try checking for cleaning tags. These give important clues such as whether or not the material is water soluble.

There are a few letters that you will probably see on the cleaning tag of your sofa. It is important that you follow these instructions and do not deviate from them as you may end up ruining your sofa in the process.

W: You can use water to clean this sofa.

S: You cannot use water to clean this sofa, it requires a solvent based cleaner.

WS: You can use either water or a solvent based cleaner to clean this sofa

X: You can only vacuum this sofa.

2. Table lamps and floor lamps

Now that you know the specific requirements for cleaning your sofa, you must get your supplies in order. You will need a vacuum cleaner that has an attachment for upholstery. You will also need a bucket and microfibre cloths. Add to that some distilled water, liquid dish soap and some white vinegar. Before using any of these on your sofa you should spot test to make sure that it is safe for you to use them.

To get the sofa clean, vacuum it first to get rid of dirt or debris. Mix a cup of water with some dishwashing liquid and a teaspoon of vinegar in a bucket. Use the microfibre cloth to clean the sofaalong with your mixture. When you are cleaning the sofa, blot gently and do not rub or scrub the sofa. When the stains have disappeared, moisten another cloth with plain water and blot the cleaned areas. To get the sofa to dry you can use a fan.
